We did KLUB 77 with the Rockumentary-Film „Over The Edge“ on September 12 2009 in honor of the anniversary of Johnny Cashs death on that very day in 2003. So I’ve been thinking of a TURBO-RADIO™ special on him, in addition to KLUB 77.
But as I looked in my rock’n’roll calendar of important births and deaths I saw that on September 15 2004 Johnny Ramone had passed away with pancreatic cancer, and that very date fitted (like in May Joeys Birthday) in our radio schedule… So it was clear to me, to dedicate the September issue to the two dead JOHNNYS.
In addition to that I woke up at six o’clock in the morning on September 15, just to get the sad news on the radio, that Patrick Swayze aka Johnny Castle (in „Dirty Dancing“) died the night before, also on pancreatic cancer!
He too had a big influence on me and probably stenciled the fifties-look and –styles for years to come only with acting as rock’n’roll-guys in films like „The Outsiders“ (as Darrel Curtis, 1983) or „Dirty Dancing“ (as Johnny Castle, 1987).
With „Too Wong Foo“ (1995), as a dragqueen, „Point Break“ (1991), as a criminal surfer dude and „ex-president“, or in „Donnie Darko“ (2001) and „Keeping Mum“ (2005), two of his latter films he proofed that he was still very good in impersonating dark and strange characters!
That’s why you are hearing this hour of JOHNNY-songs, very different in styles, but never the less interesting, and all in the honor of those three JOHNNYS!
Yours,
Mikki Sixx!
P.S: Check your record collection on the mention of the name JOHNNY in song titles – You’ll be surprised how many songs you’ll find!
