We continue our exploration of the five yama-s (the ethical underpinning of yoga) with satya, or truthfulness. This episode unravels sutra 2.36 and leads us back into our study of the klesha-s (the things that keep us stuck. You know, attachment, fear, things like that…) and asks important questions about our identity. In order to establish ourselves in truthfulness, we have to see ourselves and our world with clear vision.
This is an important SUTRA and episode that touches on the heart of yoga.
An entire ethical system could grow from this one puzzling sutra: all rooted in a belief in the power of truthfulness (satya). But here Patanjali does not ask for our belief, he asks for complete submission to truth, a submission that envelopes our lives as a whole. We are told to stand in truth (pratishthayam; pra = on, stha = stand).
To stand in truth is not simply the absence of falsehood in word and deed, but the presence of truth in deepest understanding. While rajas and tamas have free reign to act, there can be no real inner truthfulness. To stand in truth is to be the soil in which action bears fruit, and where rest is found. To stand in truth is to be the soil in which the roots of actions spread out to send up new fresh shoots. Not withdrawal from the world, but full engagement in it. Not “in this world, but not of it,” but rather “in and within this world.” Not the maya of illusion and rejection, but that of divine expression. To rest in truth is to become a part of that expressive power.
May you awaken to the mystery of being here and enter the quiet immensity of your own presence. May you have joy and peace in the temple of your senses. May you receive great encouragement when new frontiers beckon. May you respond to the call of your gift and find the courage to follow its path. May the flame of anger free you from falsity. May warmth of heart keep your presence aflame and may anxiety never linger about you. May your outer dignity mirror an inner dignity of soul. May you take time to celebrate the quiet miracles that seek no attention. May you be consoled in the secret symmetry of your soul. May you experience each day as a sacred gift woven around the heart of wonder.” John O’Donohue
