The early sutras of Patanjalis Yoga Sutra Book III have focused on concentration: dharana, dhyana, and samadhi; together forming the practice of samyama, or sustained, one-pointed meditation. The Sutras have explained to us that samyama leads us towards silence, that silence fosters union, and that union in turn brings us to Oneness, or integrity. Now Patanjali gives us encouragement by speaking of our ability to control our own destiny.
The present, udita, rises up from our past actions, thoughts, and understanding (udita = present, uprising; ud = to spring, i = to go). Like water bubbling up from an underground spring, so does our conception of now well up from the past (santo). This is the law of karma in its most basic manifestation.
And this is the topic of today’s episode… Yoga Sutra Study 3.14
The present rises from the nature of the past, and the future falls from the present like ripe fruit, but our underlying support does no waiver.
