Below the throat-pit, in the chest, is a nerve-channel called the Tortoise.
Continuing with his “knowledge of the body” series, Patanjali gives a simple formula: concentrate deeply on the well (kupa) or pit of the throat (kantha), and you will forget the pains of hunger (kshut) and thirst (pipasa). This is not a magical formula, but simply a diverting of attention. We all know that if we’re plagued by discomfort, turning our mind to something else can bring relief.
This group of Yoga Sutra aphorisms that we have been studying lately seems very applied and practical. Most commentators do not elaborate much on this Sutra 3.31 that is giving instructions on how hunger and thirst do not torment.
And while not many commentators further elaborate on this siddhi, lets take this opportunity in this episode to actually look at the “siddhis” – those supernatural yogic powers a bit.
