This week’s episode of Antipodean Sounds is an International Women’s Day Special.

Guest Catherine Hoad delves into the symbiotic relationship between academia and the music industry, highlighting strategies to enhance diversity in gig line-ups, audiences, and within the industry itself.

Steering the conversation, guest host Birgit Bachler facilitates a dynamic discussion exploring the nuances between universities, diversity and problems in both Austria and New Zealand.

Dr Catherine Hoad is an Australian researcher based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington, Aotearoa, New Zealand. As one of the founders of the research project Amplify Aotearoa her work has explored the experiences of women and enby folk in Aotearoa’s music communities, with a focus on how academia and music industries can work together to support more equitable, sustainable, and accessible outcomes across the sector.

Dr Birgit Bachler is head of the Information Design Program at FH Joanneum. She is an Austrian artist, designer and researcher previously based in Rotterdam and Wellington/The Whanganui-a-Tara recently settled again back home in Styria (Graz). Birgit plays bass in NZ/Austrian band Solo Ono and has a background in interactive, audiovisual art, critical media design and hardware and software art.
