On Zero at Radio Helsinki, Sustainability expert Kristiana Lee joined an inspiring discussion on “Empowering People with Disabilities through the Circular Economy.” The conversation highlighted how circular design can serve as a bridge toward inclusion, transforming sustainability into a tool for social and economic empowerment.
Kristiana shared global practices and innovative models that enable people with disabilities to actively participate in sustainable production, creative industries, and circular innovation. Through practical examples and reflective insights, the discussion emphasized that the circular economy is not only about reducing waste — it’s about rethinking systems to include everyone.
The discussion also focused on a concrete initiative in Albania addressing the challenge of old, donated wheelchairs and mobility aids, which often break quickly and become waste. Electric wheelchair batteries are particularly hazardous if discarded improperly.
Through this initiative, a mobile repair service will support 50 people with disabilities across Albania, extending the lifespan of wheelchairs and assistive devices while reducing waste. The project employs people with disabilities, with a special focus on women leaders who guide the initiative and benefit directly from the service.
This is the first initiative in Albania to combine circular economy principles with social inclusion, maintaining and repairing mobility devices while creating meaningful employment for the community it serves.
Implemented by Fondacioni “Së Bashku” within the framework of #EU4CELC, co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and executed by GIZ Albania in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.

Në Zero në Radio Helsinki, ekspertja e qëndrueshmërisë Kristiana Lee mori pjesë në një bisedë të frymëzuese mbi temën “Fuqizimi i Personave me Aftësi të Kufizuara përmes Ekonomisë Qarkulluese.” Diskutimi theksoi se si dizajni qarkullues mund të shërbejë si urë drejt përfshirjes, duke e shndërruar qëndrueshmërinë në fuqi sociale dhe ekonomike.
Kristiana ndau praktika ndërkombëtare dhe modele inovative që u japin personave me aftësi të kufizuara mundësinë të jenë pjesë aktive e prodhuarimit të qëndrueshëm, industrive kreative dhe inovacionit qarkullues. Përmes shembujve konkretë dhe reflektimeve frymëzuese, u theksua se ekonomia qarkulluese nuk ka të bëjë vetëm me riciklimin — por me riformësimin e sistemeve që përfshijnë të gjithë.
Diskutimi përfshiu një iniciativë konkrete në Shqipëri që adreson sfidën e karrigeve dhe pajisjeve ndihmëse të vjetra dhe të dhuruara, të cilat prishet shpejt dhe përfundojnë si mbetje. Bateritë e karrigeve elektrike janë veçanërisht të rrezikshme kur hidhen në mënyrë të pasaktë.
Përmes kësaj iniciative, një shërbim riparimi i lëvizshëm do të mbështesë 50 persona me aftësi të kufizuara në të gjithë Shqipërinë, duke zgjatur jetën e karrigeve dhe pajisjeve ndihmëse dhe duke reduktuar mbeturinat. Projekti gjithashtu punëson persona me aftësi të kufizuara, me fokus te gratë udhëheqëse, të cilat udhëheqin iniciativën dhe përfitojnë drejtpërdrejt nga shërbimi.
Kjo është iniciativa e parë në Shqipëri që kombinon parimet e ekonomisë qarkulluese me përfshirjen sociale, duke mirëmbajtur pajisjet lëvizëse dhe krijuar mundësi punësimi dhe udhëheqjeje për komunitetin që shërben.
Projekti zbatohet nga Fondacioni “Së Bashku” në kuadër të #EU4CELC, i bashkëfinancuar nga Bashkimi Europian dhe Ministria Federale Gjermane për Bashkëpunim Ekonomik dhe Zhvillim (BMZ), dhe zbatohet nga GIZ Albania në partneritet me Ministrinë e Turizmit dhe Mjedisit.
