Some US States of the so-called Salt Belt, such as Vermont or Wisconsin, work on reducing the amount of salt that’s used for winter road services. these states adopted several salt alternatives, such as beet juice and molasses, pickle brine and calcium choride, and sand, gravel, or cat litter for traction. Roads are pre-treated and plowing is improved to reduce the overall salt use and protect rivers, lakes, wildlife and infrastructure.
