The kick-off event for the research project
„Poetics of Relational and Intersectional Identities: African-Diasporic Writers in Austria“ was held on February 20th, 2026, at the Department of African Studies (seminar room 1), University of Vienna. Led by Rémi Tchokothe and project team member Laura Kisser, the project is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and runs from September 2025 to August 2029.
Key Aspects of the Project and Event:
- Objective: The project explores African-diasporic literatures in the context of „African-European“ relations, Black Europe, and focuses on designing a context-sensitive, multilingual research method.
- The Event: The kick-off was a multimedia event featuring multilingual readings, performances, art, and music, highlighting diverse languages such as Arabic, Amharic, English, Fulfulde, French, German, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin-English.
- Performers/Participants: Artists and writers involved included Ishraga Mustafa Hamid, Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin, Mihret Kebede, Precious Chiebonam Nnebedum, Njideka Iroh, Adama Dicko, and Famakan Magassa.
- Context: The event was held during Black History Month in Austria and was supported by the Department of African Studies at the University of Vienna, involving academics like Daniela Waldburger.
The project aims to provide new insights into African comparative literatures and the voices of diasporic writers in Austria.
