Solidarity is the Curriculum – Adult Education Across Borders: From Camps to Classrooms to Protest

In today’s episode, we conclude our series on democratic backsliding in Israel. In this final episode, I am joined by Dr. Veronica Lion, whose research focuses on women-led peace movements through an intersectional lens. Her expertise helps us better understand the role of gender in the pro-democracy protests, why women’s groups have been particularly concerned about the reform packages, and how different segments of Israeli society have responded. Together, we explore who has been present in these protests, and who has been missing.

This programme also  brings us to the end of the series. My aim throughout has been to highlight how fragile democratic institutions can become in times of crisis, especially under the rise of populist leadership across the globe. While international law, the rule-based order, and democratic norms may seem increasingly sidelined, it is important to remember that values such as democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and equality were hard-won through long historical struggles.

Even when these principles appear to lose their meaning, their importance does not disappear. History shows that in moments of profound crisis, their value becomes clear again, prompting renewed efforts toward justice, accountability, and peace.

I hope to see you in  the upcoming shows.
