How can artificial intelligence and digital technologies serve people, strengthen communities, and contribute to a more inclusive future – specifically for people on the African continent?

In this episode, we speak with Mary Onguko, a researcher whose work focuses on human-centered AI and inclusive digital systems for women entrepreneurs in informal economies from Daystar University in Nairobi and Hannes Wethner, a researcher and advocate for Digital Humanism from TU Wien. They discuss the vision behind Digital Humanism, the importance of African perspectives in shaping the digital future, and what participants can expect from the Summer School in Accra.

The Digital Humanism Summer School brings together researchers, PhD students, innovators, policymakers, technologists, and social scientists to explore how digital technologies and artificial intelligence can better serve society, particularly in African contexts. The program covers topics such as AI and society, digital ethics, technology policy, language inclusion, digital transformation, and human-centered technology design. Participants can look forward to interactive lectures, collaborative projects, networking opportunities, and a Digital Humanism Innovation Bootcamp organized by Carnegie Mellon University Africa.

The Second African Digital Humanism Summer School will take place from August 31 to September 5, 2026, at the Central University, Christ Temple Campus in Accra, Ghana. Priority is given to African PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scholars from a wide range of disciplines.

Applications open until 15th of July! Find out more!
