In the final live Ženergija episode before the summer break, I had the pleasure of speaking with Linda Jiayun Gao-Lenders in a gentle and intimate conversation about listening, diasporic experiences, inherited languages, and the invisible memories that live within bodies and places.
Linda reminded us how important it is to slow down, to pay attention to our surroundings, and to recognize that we learn through being with one another.
We also talked about notes of a sleepless cicada, a beautiful soundwalk that reminds us that before something can sing, it first needs time, darkness, and patience. Perhaps we all need a little more of that.
Linda Jiayun Gao-Lenders is a Chinese-German performer and sound artist. Their practice explores diasporic experience, transgenerational trauma, and the politics of listening, drawing on personal archival material, interviews, and collaborative formats. Working across performance, soundwalks, and audio installations, they investigate how silenced memories reverberate in bodies, spaces, and inherited languages. They are a founding member of footnotes collective and part of the queer synthesizer collective sad sinʞ society.
With this episode, Ženergija begins its summer pause. The live program will return in September. Until then, I hope we all allow ourselves to slow down, to rest, to listen more carefully, and to remember that rest is resistance.
Thank you to everyone who listened, shared, supported, and joined me throughout this season. See you in September. 💙
