In these times of bunkering down for a second time, while it gets colder, darker and even lonelier, I am inclined to take pleasure and awareness in the simpler things. I have been noticing the flight of migrating birds, the changing colors of the leaves, the movement of the clouds, stuff like that. Stuff I hadn’t payed attention to since childhood. It gives some type of comfort, realizing that we can do with less, much less, even though it takes one damned virus to reach that «realization». It makes sense, then, that I should dedicate at least one show to the First People, no matter where they be.
The songs here are mostly remixes, electronic/dance, semba and ambient, but also vocal chanting and drumming, fused with moombahton and dubstep. As we’re talking «tribal», Inti Illimani is with one track in here, as are the grassrot Akwesasne Women Singers and the understated Jorge Reyes. No matter how different they are, these tracks don’t make me think of bows and arrows, but rather of starting my own fire and catching my own fish, not of surviving but rather of thriving.
