Erstmals fand der Frauentag am 19. März 1911 statt. Der erste Frauentag wurde dann am in Dänemark, Deutschland, Österreich-Ungarn und der Schweiz gefeiert. 1921 wurde sein Datum durch einen Beschluss der Zweiten Internationalen Konferenz kommunistischer Frauen in Moskau endgültig auf den 8. März gelegt.
Dieses Datum wählten auch die Vereinten Nationen (UN) im Internationalen Jahr der Frau 1975 zum „Tag der Vereinten Nationen für die Rechte der Frau und den Weltfrieden“ und richteten dazu erstmals am 8. März 1975 eine Feier aus.
