CINÉMA AFRICAIN!: Exploring Feminism, Identity, and the Future of Film

On March 8th, we celebrated International Women’s Day. In Linz, the annual demonstration continues to grow, with around 4,500 people marching along Landstraße under the motto: “Smash the patriarchy, fight for democracy”.

This year, the protest was accompanied by a special artistic collaboration. Over three days, a group came together to prepare a performance under the guidance of singer-songwriter and activist Mary Cow. The workshops and performance were part of Artivismus, a project initiated by activist Mar Pilz in collaboration with FIFTITU%. Together with Mary Cow, who hails from Nicaragua, participants worked on staging her song Con la misma moneda (German: Mit barer Münze).
Mary wrote this song some time ago, but it remains highly relevant. It speaks to the need for safe spaces, free from harassment—a topic that resonates deeply across borders. The multilingual workshop aimed to bring together activists, artists, and individuals to collectively rehearse and perform the piece during the March 8th demonstration in Linz.

We spoke with Mary Cow, Marta D., and Mar Pilz about the project, the song, and the political and social challenges they seek to address through their work.
