Learning by doing. You have to study and learn the base, whatever you do, to know the history of something you are researching and then you can deconstruct it. It’s the same in life, a system like patriarchy shapes us, and it’s up to us to destroy it. It’s hard sometimes to see everything through identities and when people put you in boxes, where they think you should be. The great Jelena Popržan, from whom we can learn and enjoy her music, is a world musician.
Jelena Popržan, violist, singer & composer, born in Novi Sad, based in Vienna.
Classically trained on the viola, she has always been passionately interested in a wide variety of musical genres. With her bands Catch-Pop String-Strong, Sormeh, and Madame Baheux, she has quickly become a fixture of the Austrian music scene and beyond; her career took her to Peru, Samarkand, New York, and Istanbul.
Her performances and projects, amalgamating pop, rock, jazz, classical music, and world music (Including Balkan music), are characterized by unusual vocal coloratura, witty stage presentation, boundless energy, and a playful curiosity for uncommon instruments and for exploring the capabilities of loop technology. Her interests also range to contemporary music, free improvisation, and theatre.
She was awarded 2 times for the best original theatre music, several times with the awards in the World Music scene, and once for her work in general.
Currently touring with her solo project “La Folia” and the new Jelena Popržan Quartett.
