A conversation with architect Dorina Papa. “The Beauty That Violates: Tirana as an Ethics-Free Laboratory”

We reflected on Tirana as a continuous urban experiment, where aesthetics are often used to justify decisions made without debate, without ethics, and without citizens.
“Beauty” emerged as an alibi for urban violence: renders replacing lived reality, and architecture being used to erase social conflict rather than confront it.
A critical question stayed with us throughout the conversation: when a city becomes more “beautiful” but more unjust, is it still development?

Reflektuam mbi Tiranën si një eksperiment urban të vazhdueshëm, ku estetika shpesh shërben si justifikim për vendime pa debat, pa etikë dhe pa qytetarë.
“E bukura” u shfaq si alibi për dhunë urbane: renderat që zëvendësojnë jetën reale dhe arkitektura që përdoret për të fshirë konfliktin social, në vend që ta adresojë atë.
