Versorgungskrisen führten in der Welterberegion Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut im Lauf der Geschichte zum Einsatz alternativer Energieträger und den damit verbundenen technischen Innovationen und gesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozessen.
Die mittelalterliche Gründung von Hallstatt erfolgte als ganzheitliches Konzept. Dabei wurde nicht nur die komplexe technische Infrastruktur der Salzproduktion neu geschaffen, sondern auch nachhaltig wirksame soziale Strukturen festgelegt.
